JUNE 2015 Webinar - presented by Ann E. Hurst BCC, Kay I. Gorka BCC, and Alexander Jackson

Weighing Spiritual Care and Other Priorities; A Dialogue With A Chief Executive

Program Summary

Kay Gorka and Ann Hurst hold a one-on-one discussion with Alexander Jackson, CEO, Sacred Heart Medical Center & Children’s Hospital, and Holy Family Hospital, Spokane WA, on, among other subjects, leadership competencies for spiritual care - how to translate chaplain-speak into administration-speak. Alex is a gentle, wise, young leader with a serious Catholic heart and passion for attending to spiritual needs. He is also working in one of the most challenging environments with regard to stewardship – lousy payer mix in a smaller ‘remote’ community with marginal economic stability (compared to most of the Providence hospitals that sit along the I5 corridor from Alaska to Southern California) with the largest, high-acuity hospital in a system that is now centralized in a place with a much better payer mix and denser population. He makes choices every day that cost him things he’d prefer in order to almost cover the essentials sort of. This is likely true across the country, but the circumstances here are definitely a cluster of common challenges, so his insights will be useful.
